If a picture paints a thousand words...

Pseuds may have seen this photograph in When Saturday Comes or, if they are lucky, Peter Robinson and Doug Cheeseman's beautiful book "1966 Uncovered". Pele, a man apart, training at the 1966 World Cup.

Jesse Owens with Berlin Olympic guides.

This is the woman who immortalised Owens' achievements and Nazi rallies.

Neil Leifer's amazing shot of Ali in triumph.

Ali's favourite - Andy Warhol's portrait.

historical sports pictures and art are stories in themselves, thin slivers of time of amazing, outstanding, poignant, intimate and glorious moments

here are some wonderful examples, thanks mouth, if these stories don't provoke reaction or can't inspire us to write purple prose on the heights and depths of humanity then what can?

Thank you File - I feel that way too.

I think it would be fascinating to do some sort of comparison with historical sports pictures and those of today. In the sports that are most televised (eg footbal)I seldom see an image on the front or back pages of the news sheets that is really inspiring.
There was a fantastic picture of Monty Panesar last summer when he got his first test wicket, and every year there are iconic pictures of the Tour as it whistles through the sunflower fields of France.

oh and sorry to be picky, but shouldn't the title read: picture paints?

Mimi - Yes, but I forgive File as he provided both this space and a real enthusaism for this kind of sporting mini-gallery.

I can be a bit non-plussed by photography, especially "art photography", but I love photojournalism and, naturally, sports photojournalism. I used to subscribe to Cycle Sport and Procycling for the photos as much as anything tracking the year from the Tour Down-Under to the Belgian races and Paris-Roubaix, on to the beauty that is the Giro, the Tour, San-Sebastian, the Vuelta, Lombardy, the Worlds and then the Six Dayers. As I write, I can see those shots of Milan - San Remo, of the crowds on L'Alpe d'Huez, of the long straight finish of Paris-Tours in front of my eyes!

Anyway, there's so much available and you should have a look at Getty Images which is fantastic!

File has given a space for this here and I look forward to a selection from you him and others.

sssh, file, don't mention sharks. Offside still hasn't recovered from the loss of his shark army.
Seriously, this is a nice space for the pics. Mouth is treating us to some rare delights.
Thank you for setting this up.
